INTRODUCING OUR LATEST ENVIRONMENTAL INITIATIVE:
THE SEA TURTLE NURSERY

More than a resort, Waldorf Astoria Los Cabos Pedregal is an immersive experience. With the waterfront at our secluded escape being home to five of the seven sea turtle species in the world, we’re thrilled to share our latest environmental initiative, our Turtle Nursery. This new project will allow us to protect the sea turtles from nesting to the release into the Pacific ocean, becoming the only resort in Los Cabos with permission to protect and conserve these beautiful creatures.

We’re proud to protect these endangered species while educating guests and team members about the marvelous  they are. With each turtle’s release will come more consciousness to the planet. The adventure begins here.

DID YOU KNOW?

  • There are 8 different species of sea turtles in the world.
  • 7 of 8 species of sea turtles Visit Mexico during their lives.
  • 5 of 8 species of sea turtles visit Baja California Sur.
  • Sea Turtles live 99% in the water and 1 % only on land.

The sea turtle symbolizes wisdom, peace, perseverance, and navigation, but most importantly, the ability to find one’s way home? That’s why they are the insignia at Waldorf Astoria Los Cabos Pedregal, seen throughout our secluded haven. Just like our guests, they always find their way back home.

CONNECTION WITH NATURE

Los Cabos is a destination known for its connection to the natural world, from the deep sea and wild cliffside to the abundant marine life that lives beneath the waves. This connection grows strongest during sea turtle hatching season, a time when the area’s nature-lovers, environmentalists, and conservationists come together to foster a deeper connection through information and education on protecting our precious ocean life.

THE INTENTION

1 out of 1000 turtles reach adulthood due to a variety of factors. 5 of 8 sea turtle species visit our whitesand beaches. From mid-summer to late fall, Los Cabos becomes a sea turtle’s sanctuary. The intention behind our turtle refuge is to provide a safer environment for turtle eggs to hatch and travel back into the ocean and reach adulthood. Our special sanctuary is monitored 24 hours a day by our trained staff and certified SEMARNAT (Secretary of Environment and Natural Resources).

THE PROCESS

Nesting Season is typically between August and December. While male turtles live on the water all the time, female turtles come back to land specifically to nest. Each time a female turtle nests it takes about 60 minutes and 90-120 eggs are laid by the turtle in that time—this only happens approximately every two years! At our new artificial nest area nearby La Palapa, we will collect eggs and place them into our nursery where turtles will hatch between 45-65 days. In order to make the conservation and movement to our artificial nests possible, our team needs to move the eggs within a window no larger than 6 hours after the turtle finishes their nest. Our refuge will be able to host 48 nests!

A UNIQUE PROJECT IN LOS CABOS

A matter of huge importance, almost every species of sea turtle is now classified as endangered, with some species being critically endangered. Taking or manipulating turtle eggs is a federal crime, if you don’t have the rights and permissions. Alongside the Municipality of Los Cabos, Waldorf Astoria is the only hotel that has permissions to manipulate turtle eggs and protect them in their own artificial nests. With this privilege comes great responsibility. Our Loss Prevention Staff will be trained for monitoring our beaches and recognize the signs and for evidence of a nest.

JOIN THE EXPERIENCE

Our team at Waldorf Astoria Los Cabos Pedregal will be scheduling the release of baby sea-turtles into the deep blue Pacific Ocean at our property’s waterfront—allowing special, small groups of guests to catch a glimpse of the magical spectacle while keeping as far out as possible, without compromising the well-being of our nurtured creatures. Leave your cares behind and live unforgettable memories.
