YOUR WALDORF ASTORIA GUIDE
TO WHALE WATCHING SEASON IN LOS CABOS

Nestled between the spectacular cliffside and brilliant blue Pacific Ocean, Waldorf Astoria Los Cabos Pedregal is a refined haven for natural adventures and outdoor experiences. One of the most magical of all is whale watching off the pristine shores of Los Cabos. Each year in early autumn, these gentle giants can be spotted in impressive numbers all along the coast. One of nature’s most delightful signs of seasons changing—hundreds of whales migrate from the fridied waters of the Arctic to the warm, calm waters surrounding the Baja Peninsula.

From December to April, there is truly no better place to view such a spectacle than Los Cabos. Here are six things you need to know about whale watching season during your stay at Waldorf Astoria Los Cabos Pedregal.

SIX MONTHS OF EXCEPTIONAL VIEWING

By late December, the whales make their way south completing the 19,312-jm (12,000-mile) migration, staying until April when they repeat their journey northward. Ideal climate, shallow waters, salinity, and abundant marine life make the bays and lagoons of Los Cabos the perfect place for whales to birth and rear their young. Of the eleven species of whales found around the globe, eight venture to the waters off Los Cabos, including minke, bryde, fin, sei, humpback, gray and blue. This six-month, round-trip sojourn is the longest trip made by any animal in the world. Staying in Los Cabos, you always have a front-row seat to the spectacular show.

DON’T WAIT TO BOOK

The very best time to observe the whales is during this seasonal migration, from December through April. Throughout the season, you will find charters running tours to the migratory grounds with a variety of boat options—from small, cozy vessels to comfortable catamarans and private yachts. A style to suit every mood, you will venture out to see pods of whales spouting and frolicking with their young. Along the way, you may even get the bonus of spotting whale sharks (not to be confused with whales)—the largest fish in the sea, whose migration to local waters also takes place between December and April. Whichever voyage you choose, be sure to book your trips early as tours tend to fill up quickly.

WHOLESOME FUN FOR EVERYONE

Whale watching season is full of fun for travelers of all ages. Whether you’re traveling with your kids, your special someone, or your friends—guests five years old and older can always join the fun. Cabo’s public tours offer a variety of options for every taste, from a 24-foot Zodiac boat with a maximum capacity of 15 people to a 42-foot sailboat that sets sail at sunset, including open bar and snacks for all. For those seeking an extra comfortable space, you can enjoy a whale watching tour in a high-speed inflatable boat, providing you with the best opportunity to witness and photograph these incredible mammals as they put on a show just yards away.

PRIVATE TOURS TO SEE IT ALL

For those seeking a more intimate whale watching experience, Waldorf Astoria Los Cabos Pedregal’s Personal Concierge is happy to arrange private tours—with a variety of options including sailboats, catamarans, or even a yacht of your choosing. Adventurers may want to opt for the eco-adventure onboard a local sailing boat, with boats of different sizes to fit every need. For a bit more luxury, you can choose a 43-foot deluxe catamaran or for the ultimate luxury, a beautiful yacht.
